Traveling with celiac disease isn’t always easy—but with a little prep, it’s totally doable. Before any trip, I always map out gluten-free restaurants using the Find Me Gluten-Free app. It gives me peace of mind and a game plan, especially when dining abroad.
While I miss the spontaneity of stumbling into any cute cafe, planning ahead has led me to some hidden gems I may have otherwise missed.
Last week, my husband and I explored Prague, and it was my first time navigating gluten-free living in a European country that doesn’t speak English natively. Luckily, many locals spoke English.
As for reading food labels? That was a little more complicated. Cue, Google Translate, my new travel MVP.
In full transparency, I did have a rough start—gluten pancakes on day one (an accident, I think, at a restaurant with great gluten-free reviews), followed by a few close calls. In several restaurants, staff caught their own mistakes as soon as the food hit the table. And in others, we had to ask two or three times before the staff realized what they set in front of me wasn’t gluten free. I appreciated their honesty and proactive fixes, but it reminded me how important it is to stay alert, ask questions, and always double-check.
That said, here are the Top 3 Gluten Free places I ate in Prague that I highly recommend:
1. Bassotto
Known for its gluten-free pastries, cakes, and pizza, Bassotto stole my gluten-free heart. I ordered a buttery, flakey croissant the size of my head and would go back in a heartbeat. It’s a must-visit for celiac travelers in Prague.
2. Grand Cru
Grand Cru was a little more of an upscale experience. We ate with a larger group and had a pre-set menu. After speaking with the staff, they brought out gluten-free bread and made separate, safe dishes for every course. The food was phenomenal, and I felt incredibly well cared for. It was so tasty, I forgot to snap a picture of the main course. Whoops!
3. El Centro
This Latin-inspired restaurant is located near Prague Castle and features an impressive amount of gluten-free options, including gluten-free churros and delicious empanadas. Everything was clearly labeled on the menu. We dined in El Centro‘s charming garden patio, and it was one of the most enjoyable meals of the trip.
Gluten-Free Travel Tips for Prague:
- Download the Find Me Gluten-Free app before your trip.
- Use Google Translate to scan menus and food labels.
- Don’t be afraid to ask detailed questions about cross-contamination.
- If something feels off—trust your gut (pun intended).
Remember: These are my personal experiences and recommendations. Always do your own research, double-check with restaurant staff, and trust your comfort level.
